Porous and highly textured surfaces—including raw wood, concrete, brick, stucco, and unfinished materials—are poor candidates because water and adhesive cannot form a stable bond in the grooves and valleys. Moisture becomes trapped, preventing proper contact between the vinyl and substrate, leading to premature peeling or adhesion failure [1][2]. Air-egress and air-release vinyls should never be applied wet, as liquid can trap moisture in the tiny adhesive channels designed for dry application, causing long-term bubbling and failure [1].

Reflective and metalized films present a specific risk on unpainted metals: moisture trapped between dissimilar metals can create a galvanic cell, leading to corrosion and delamination, so these films should be avoided on bare metal surfaces or applied only with appropriate barrier coatings [1]. Complex 3D surfaces with rivets, seams, and deep recesses are also problematic because fluid collects in these areas, eventually causing the vinyl to tent, lift, or crack [1].

Lightly textured surfaces may sometimes work with wet application if texture depth is minimal and heat and careful squeegeeing are applied, but results depend on texture amplitude and the specific vinyl product. Always follow the vinyl manufacturer's instructions, clean and decontaminate the surface thoroughly, and test on a small patch before committing to a large installation. For low-surface-energy plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene, adhesion promoters or primers are essential to achieve reliable bonding [1][2].
