Climbing roses will not damage cables and pipes through root action, but above-ground stems, thorns, and weight can cause problems. The main risks are mechanical abrasion of insulation, tangling of canes around fixings, moisture and debris retention accelerating corrosion, concealment making inspection difficult, and potential wildlife activity in dense foliage.

To manage these risks, install a separate trellis or wire frame positioned 5–10 cm (minimum) to 20–30 cm (preferred) away from the wall, so the rose grows on its own framework rather than directly against services. Plant the bare root 20–30 cm from the wall as planned. Train canes deliberately and prune annually to limit weight and density. Choose a moderately vigorous, shade-tolerant variety such as 'Madame Alfred Carrière' or 'New Dawn' to keep the plant manageable. Where cables or pipes are exposed or run close to the planting area, apply protective sleeving such as conduit or split-loom tubing. Before planting, have an electrician or heat-pump installer inspect the wall-mounted equipment and confirm any additional protection needed for safety compliance.
