I want to plant rose that climbs over my 6 feet wall. What kind of pot would be the most suitable? How large?
Use a large pot (60×60 cm, 90–100 L minimum) with heavy material, excellent drainage, and loam-based compost; anchor support to the wall, not the pot.
For a climbing rose to cover a 6-foot wall, choose a large, sturdy container at least 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) in diameter and depth, holding a minimum of 90–100 litres of compost [1][2]. Heavy, durable materials such as terracotta, stone, or frost-proof ceramic are essential—they provide weight to prevent wind tipping and better root insulation. The pot must have multiple large drainage holes and be elevated on bricks or feet to allow water to escape freely [1][2].
Use loam-based compost (such as John Innes No. 3) rather than lightweight peat-based mixes, as it retains moisture and nutrients better and suits the long-lived woody structure of a climbing rose [1][2]. Install a sturdy trellis or wire system anchored firmly to the wall—not to the pot—before planting, so the canes have fixed support and will not pull the container over as they mature [1]. Plan to refresh the top layer of compost annually and repot or root-prune every 3–5 years to prevent root-binding and maintain vigour [1][2]. Potted climbing roses require more frequent watering than ground-planted specimens because containers dry faster.
