If you cannot use the app—because you lack a biometric passport, the app cannot read your passport chip, or you experience technical issues—you must attend an in-person appointment at a UKVCAS or other biometric enrolment centre. At this appointment, your fingerprints will be scanned and a digital photograph taken.

Importantly, the Home Office retains discretionary authority to request an in-person appointment for additional identity verification if needed, even if you successfully use the digital app. Dependents included in your application must also satisfy biometric requirements based on their passport type.

It is critical to distinguish between BNO visa extension (leave to remain) and BNO passport renewal, as these have different requirements. Passport renewals typically do not require biometric fingerprints for routine cases, though a valid photograph and supporting documents are needed.
