Is it posisble to plant a climbing rose bare root on the northern side of a 6-feet wall, and hope that it will eventually climb over the wall to get more sunshine? I'm living in Bristol, UK.
Yes, it is possible but challenging. Choose shade-tolerant varieties, plant away from the wall, and manage expectations for slower growth and lighter flowering.
You can plant a bare-root climbing rose on a north-facing wall in Bristol, but success depends on careful variety selection and realistic expectations. North-facing walls receive significantly less direct sunlight, which will limit both growth rate and flowering compared to sunnier aspects. [1]
Select a shade-tolerant climbing rose such as 'Madame Alfred Carrière', 'Zephirine Drouhin', or 'New Dawn', which are specifically suited to lower-light conditions. [1] Plant the bare root 20–30 cm away from the wall to avoid the dry rain shadow effect and allow room for root development. [2] Improve the soil with organic matter, ensure good drainage, and install sturdy support wires or trellis. Train the main canes at a shallow angle (roughly 30–45 degrees) or even horizontally rather than vertically, as this encourages flowering laterals and faster growth toward the wall top. [2]
While roses do exhibit some phototropism and will grow toward available light, do not rely on the plant to climb over the wall and suddenly flower profusely on the sunny side. Instead, choose a variety that will perform acceptably in the shade it will actually experience. With proper care—regular watering, mulching, and annual feeding—your rose should establish over several seasons, though flowering will remain modest compared to a south-facing position.
